One way to judge health
care quality is to measure the efficiency and extent to which specific assessments
and treatments are provided. St. John's Mercy participates
in national initiatives that are designed to measure health care quality
and to advance patient care and safety.
Participating hospitals
voluntarily report on a set of quality measures. Initially, the data includes
various measures for heart attack, congestive heart failure, community-acquired
pneumonia and surgical site infection prevention. The web sites of the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Joint
Comission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) provide
more information on this initiative and the results of participating hospitals.
