Our Research Physicians

Timothy R. Smith, MD, RPh, is Medical
Director of Mercy Health Research. He brings a background of Internal
Medicine and Pharmacology to the research division and has developed expertise
in other areas of clinical investigation, including diabetes and metabolism,
cardiovascular medicine and neurology. Dr. Smith is a nationally recognized
researcher and lecturer on headache treatment. He was recently received
the National Headache Foundation (NHF) Lectureship Award for 2001. This
award is given annually to the top medical lecturer in the country on
the topic of headaches.

Joseph P. Drozda Jr., MD spent more
than 15 years in private cardiology practice before joining Mercy Health
Research. During that time, he held leadership positions including
vice president of medical management, chief medical officer, chief of
cardiology and medical director within various health organizations.
Dr. Drozda graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine.

James Banks III, MD is
board certified in Headache Management and Family Practice. Dr. Banks founded
the Carilion Headache Center in Roanoke, Virginia and served as its first
medical director until his move to Mercy Health Research.
He is a member of the American Headache Society, the International Headache Society,
the American Academy of Neurology, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, and
the National Headache Foundation, among other professional societies, and currently
serves as the chair for the primary care section of the American Headache Society.
